Xbox Live Troubleshooting

Xbox Live Troubleshooting

This is a general guide on how to help eliminate Xbox Live connectivity issues. We will need to setup a Static IP address on the Xbox and configure port forwarding in your routing device.

1. To start we will need to turn on the Xbox, then go to the Settings heading, from there you will need to use the Left Stick to move Down until you reach System, and then press A.

2. Next, choose Network Settings. Then you want to select Wired Network.

3. Next we will want to select Configure Network and press A. Here we want to select IP Settings by pressing A, then we will want to select Manual to finish the Static IP address assignment.

4. Here you will need to fill out the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway information. These settings will vary depending on the brand of router you are using. For our guide, we are using the standard IP scheme that Linksys routers use. After those 3 things select Done and push A.

  • IP Address: 192.168.1.115
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1

5. Next we want to select and change the DNS Settings to Manual as well. Depending on your ISP, these numbers will vary. Nex-Tech’s are 24.225.5.2 and 24.225.0.1. After entering these IP's into the Primary and Secondary DNS Servers select Done and push A.

6. Now that you are finished configuring a Static IP address, you can run a test to see if it can connect to XBOX Live. The main thing you are looking for is your “NAT Type” listed at the bottom. We hope to see this at “Open.” If not, you may experience some online issues in games such as Halo 3. If this is an older router you are using, you might want to check the firmware version of your router. If you don’t know how to do this, you can contact the Brainy Bunch (888-565-2724), as they can assist you in upgrading it if needed. If that doesn’t work, you may want to invest in a new router that says it’s “XBOX Live compatible.” For more assistance on “NAT type” visit http://www.xbox.com/.

By having a NAT type open, you are now ready to experience less lag and ping times, ultimately creating the best user experience. Remember, the better the upload, the better the experience as well. Make sure to stop by your Internet Service Provider and see what package plans will best suite your needs. Often you can get an increase in upload for a fee.

  • Log into their modem via HTTP, if you are unable to log into their modem via their External IP address. You need to enable WAN HTTP access first. To do this, have the customer log into the modem on their computer, click on Management -->Access Control Put a check in the box on the WAN side of the HTTP Service, click on Save/Apply at the bottom. You should now be able to log into the customers modem remotely.

  • Next, log into the customers modem remotely by either looking up their IP address in the appropriate redback, or have the customer browse to ipchicken.com or any other web site that displays their current IP address.

  • Once you are logged into the modem, Click on “Advanced Info” on the left hand side.

  • Next click on NAT, in the middle is where you will enter the appropriate port numbers and the specific protocol for each port. (If you do not see the NAT option, make sure PPPoE is enabled the modem and you have checked the box labeled Enable NAT in the PPPoE setup.

  • When setting up port forwarding, make sure to choose a custom server titled “XBOX LIVE”

  • In the Server IP address spot, you must put the static IP address set up in their Xbox360 (192.168.1.X)

  • The ports required for Xbox Live are TCP 80, UDP 88, TCP/UDP 3074 and TCP/UDP 53.

  • Once all the appropriate ports are entered in with their correct protocol, click on Save/Apply at the bottom.
