Android 4.0.x - Generic Mail Setup

These steps should apply for most versions of Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich using the default mail client that comes with the Operating System. As newer versions of Android 4.x.x evolve settings and the order of the screens could be altered.


Android Mail Setup

  1. From the home screen, open the Applications Menu and select E-mail from the applications list.

  2. If you have not configured a mail account on your phone already the following screen will appear, here you will need to select Other.



  3. Now you will need to type in your Email address and password, then we can click on Manual Setup.



  4. Here we will select POP3.



  5. Here you will need to make sure the Username is the full email address, the POP3 Server for a ruraltel.net address will be pop3.ruraltel.net, Port number is 110, Security type is None, Authentication Method is Password, and then it is a personal preference if you want to leave your email on the server. Once you have verified all the settings, please click on Next.



  6. Now we will configure the Outgoing Mail settings. The SMTP server for ruraltel.net users will be smtp.ruraltel.net, Port number 25, Security type set as none, put a check mark on Require sign-in, Authentication method will be PLAIN, the username will need to be the full email address, and then click on Next.



  7. At this step everything here is going to be your personal preference.



    1. Inbox checking frequency: Is how often your phone will go out to the server to check for new messages. Setting the time higher can save battery life but you will not be notified about messages as soon.
    2. Send email from this account by default: If you have multiple email accounts on the phone, this will be the default account messages will be sent out if checked.
    3. Notify me when email arrives: This will show you the email icon at the top of your task menu when new messages have come in.
    4. Sync email from this account: This will make sure that both your Inbox on the mail server and your phone replicate each other.
    5. Sync over Wi-Fi only: You can use this option if you want to save battery life or have a service provider that has bandwidth caps. Note: Only check this option if you actually connect to Wi-Fi networks.

  8. Next you will be brought to the last setup screen. Here you can give your account a name, customize the name for your outgoing messages, and then you can click on Next. You are now finished setting up the account and should be able to send and receive your email. The "Your name" section will be what shows up on your email message when you send them to someone else.
